Five Tips for Camping with Children

June 26, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized

Planning to take your kids camping may make you nervous if you have never done it before, but with a few simple tips, your trip should be easy and fun. You will learn more about nature with your children than you have ever known, while having entertainment at the same time.

1. Let the kids feel useful

Most kids get bored just sitting around while their parents put up the tent and set up camp. If you let them help you set up camp, they do not get bored and often find it fun since many of the activities are not something they get to do at home. Kids can unroll sleeping bags, collect twigs or wood for the fire and even help set up the tent by holding spikes and pulling out corners.

2. Rainy day activities

A very rainy day at camp usually means a group of bored kids stuck in a small tent. When you are packing for your camping trip make a special bag or backpack that has activities they can only do if it rains. This bag can contain coloring books and crayons, play dough, board and card games and even small toys.

3. Fun with food

When you are camping is the time you can have fun with food, it is not every day you can roast your whole meal in a fire. A roasted hotdog on a stick and then dessert of smores will make this camping trip memorial for your young one.

4. Location

As an adult, there are camp spots that are more fun for you than they would be for kids. Kids do not care about water that looks beautiful if they cannot play in it or freezing temperatures while they are trying to sleep in a tent. Make your camp area in a kid friendly area, with an area for swimming, trails for walking and areas for exploring.

5. Don’t forget the basics

You need the basics at least for kids, tents, sleeping bags; easy to prepare foods will all make your trip simple for you. A few other things you will want to remember is extra clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen and a first aid kit. Do not forget wipes for hands and anything else that needs to be cleaned up.
