About

Welcome to End Pavement, a blog dedicated to the great outdoors in general, cycling and hiking in particular, and Southern California in all its glory.
The popular conception of SoCal and LA is of a vast concrete wasteland, paved over and stuccoed beyond all recognition. There is a measure of truth in that vision, unfortunately, and in ever-increasing ways as the masses move inland. Even so, there is still much of the natural world to see and explore, whether hiking in the foothills and mountains, or cycling past the end of the street in suburbia, or simply walking from place to place in the city. Truth be told, there is a lot of nature all over the place, waiting to be discovered.
This blog is written by Robert Daeley, a writer and programmer in SoCal who has unearthed a love of what might be called “Breathing on Purpose” — getting out from in front of the various viewing screens that dominate modern existence and focusing on far-off peaks or looking up steep hills from the vantage point of a bicycle. This has not always been the case in his past, but a serious illness a few years back offered a new perspective on things.
End Pavement is going to be a journal of exploration — you are welcome to come along!
